Development of a characterization protocol for contaminated soil

DESSAU-SOPRIN

Proponent :

Dessau-Soprin

Name of project:

Development of a protocol for characterizing soils contaminated with heterogeneous fill materials.

Summary description of project:

The expansion or redevelopment of urban sites is usually detrimentally affected by a lack of acceptable management options from both an economic and environmental perspective. Several of these sites have heterogeneous fill material containing construction waste and combustion residues -the latter materials being residues from the metallurgical and railway industries. A lack of awareness of the specific characteristics of these materials and their distribution make it difficult to choose the best management option.

The DESSAU-SOPRIN project allows identifying different categories of materials and assigning them a suitable management method. Over the years, bibliographic research has already allowed identifying the different potential generators of combustion residues on the City of Montréal territory. These waste sources have been the subject of an in-depth characterization, from both a chemical and ecotoxicological standpoint. The results of the analysis and the interpretation of the different data allow best guiding site managers toward the most suitable management methods.
